How To Get Your Good Ideas Heard
Words: 458 | Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2010

Getting yourself heard can sometimes be a challenge. You have to make sure that when you DO get the opportunity, you seize it with both hands. Good ideas often get lost in organizations, because the person with the idea throws it into a meeting or mentions it in passing, hoping that someone will do something about it.

So what are some of the steps that you can take to get your ideas heard? Here are some easy ways to make sure that others will listen to what you are saying and act upon it.

To get your ideas heard, you need to plan your communication. This sounds simple in theory but can take more effort than you may think. The structure I'm going to give you in this article will help you to make your case with impact and leave your audience impressed with your approach and your thinking.

The best time to use this powerful format is when you have an idea or a recommendation that will solve an already-identified problem, and you want the audience to take action on your solution. This is the perfect time to engage your audience and to get them interested and involved.

So, here are the 5 steps that will get your ideas heard:

1. Summarize the Problem

* Let your audience know that you have an idea that will solve an identified problem

* Briefly outline the problem

* Explain why it is a problem

2. Introduce Your Solution

* Introduce your idea and explain how it relates to the problem

* Clarify your proposal

3. Positive Consequences

* Outline the positive consequences of implementing your solution. Ensure that these consequences are of value to your audience

4. Deliver The Evidence

* Produce the facts and information that provide the evidence of the value of your solution

5. Summary

*Summarize the problem and the positive consequences of solving it

* Summarize your solution and the method of implementation

* Summarize the positive consequences of implementing YOUR solution

6. Action

* Outline the action that needs to be taken, by whom and when

Top Tip: Plan out your presentation carefully and, if possible, get a colleague/s to see it and give you feedback. This is one of the most important steps, because you want to get honest feedback. This will go a long way to giving you added confidence and will also give you a chance to test the validity and appeal of your solution.

With a little practice and planning, you can get your good ideas heard.
