This article gives you advice on Free stuff you can use within your business. I use it and it works. I am known as a Techy kind of guy and for good reason. I love the latest technology and when its also FREE I cant get enough of it!
We have hunted down solutions to problems we encounter in an ongoing desire to improve the efficiency of the business. The solutions we have put together are quite groovy techie friends and clients have suggested we share this knowledge to benefit other individuals and businesses. Please note that referring products or brands is not allowed by on line article publishers so you will have to guess who the initials refer to! By referring to these I am not endorsing their brand names as there are other equally good offerings out there. They just happen to be my personal choices based on experience.
09/07/2010 - I love Free it's so much better ...
If you are one of our customer reading this, we don't actually offer Free services or solutions (although all document scanning and document management related advice is totally Free) but there is plenty of Free stuff out there in the world that may benefit you as much as it has us. These are just some.......
G Apps - we run all of our email, calendars and contacts through G and have a great intranet now as well. Basically a hosted Exchange and as it's free you can't beat it. We are a medium sized company and the cost saving and application benefits are immense. I will expand on this again in the future.
All of the PC's in the company now run off the shelf free applications. We are constantly adding to our number of PC's and one of the biggest pains is cleaning off all of the preloaded software packages that they insist on bludgeoning you with. The result is a good clean web browser that has plenty of widgetry. We are now using a new phone system and we can make calls by highlighting a number in the browser, right clicking and selecting dial - saves us so much time. We have found great solutions that we will again explore including a Calendar module that links and syncs to our Calendars and a neat tool that allows shared contacts by syncing with any one of our mail accounts.
We send all documents out as PDF's which everyone can open these days and makes compatibility issues a thing of the past. We do do this from any PC version and open the same documents in the same way. Free, user friendly and maintenance is a doddle. Highly recommended.
Phone System - We employ workers at a number of offices and needed a comprehensive, effective and cost effective phone system. Free was attractive again so I researched and trialled a number of systems. We have settled on one right now which is a great VOIP PBX that allows flexibility with our calls. The whole the system is stable. Security is a big issue - We have been hacked in the past and on one occasion someone hacked the phoned system making calls all night long to an African destination. We are still developing our phone systems and wish VOIP was 5% more reliable but it's way cheaper than ISDN so we will persevere with it. All good stuff and free too. There are apps you can buy that do the same thing practically but at circa
