Words: 366 | Date: Sat, 8 May 2010
One of the most frustrating things that can happen to you while you are happily surfing the Internet is when speeds slow down to a crawl, for no apparent reason. That one site where you download videos in a couple seconds is now taking several minutes. There a few possible reasons for this. Internet connection problems, web site maintenance issues, but what is generally the main cause is a computer virus.
Computer viruses are called this because they spread just like human viruses, from person to person. And just like a human virus, you don't usually know that you've given it to somebody else unless it's to late. There are two different classes of viruses to worry about.
The absolute most terrible kind is referred to as malware, short for malicious software. This is created with the sole intention of causing harm and destruction to your computer. Sometimes they can cause your computer to crash completely, while other times they get into your email list, and erase it completely, but not before sending copies of itself to all your friends.
The other kind of virus isn't quite so bad, but can be just as frustrating. Their main intention isn't to cause harm, but to collect information. Your browsing history, the web sites you visit most often, and even personal information. This is so somebody, somewhere, can use this information to try and sell you things.
The problems with these spyware and adware programs, as they are most commonly called, is that they slow your machine down to a crawl. They get in and steal precious resources, making it near impossible to do anything productive.
Luckily, there are plenty of software programs designed specifically to find and destroy these adware and spyware programs. Most will not only scan your system and remove them on a regular basis, but will also keep them from installing themselves in the first place. If you don't already have one of these powerful programs installed and running, it is highly recommended that you do so at the first opportunity, to protect yourself and make your Internet surfing experience as pleasurable as possible.
