Ready, Get Set, Pay It Off!
Words: 415 | Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2010

Okay, that's it. It's time to pay it down and off this year, no matter what. So how are we going to do that? There are only a few rules to follow to get that debt off your back.

First, stop spending. It's really that simple. Stop. Now. No more excuses. That's it. You do not need to buy even one more thing. The next time it crosses your mind to buy something, just say no. Next time you go out, leave your wallet at home.

Now, burn that plastic. Get every swipeable out of your house-melt it down, make a mound, and bury it out back. You just do not need to swipe ever again. If your friends ask why you're not spending any more tell them, "I'm trying to get debt free this year." You may be surprised how many of them will clap you on the back and congratulate you. Some may even join you-let them. Then help each other cut back this year, and get debt free.

Now decide which debt you're going to work on first. Usually, that's the highest interest debt. But don't stop there. Be sure you make a payment on every single debt you have. Skipping any payment can lower your credit rating-which is never good. So pay something-and try to make it more than the minimum-every month towards all your debts.

When you pay off one debt, add that amount to the next debt, so you'll pay that second debt off even faster. If you can, shift as much debt as possible to a line of credit or any other low interest line or account that you can. It'll make it easier if you're paying off one debt rather than several, and save you a few bucks, too.

When you pay off all your debts, don't go out and get more credit cards. Few people really need more than one credit card, but at least hold the line to two of them. Adjust your thinking about credit cards-they're not income extenders. Instead, think of your credit card as an emergency card, and then use it that way.

Finally, if you haven't already, make a monthly budget. Also include an emergency stash. Know what bills you have and how much money you make. Be sure you never spend more than you take-that's what got you into trouble in the first place, right?

If you are trying to pay off debt this year, but are struggling to make your many payments, a debt consolidation loan can help.
