Diabetes is mainly due to high level of glucose in the blood. The glucose levels in the blood rise due to low or no production of insulin. People with diabetes are concentrating more on pills and insulin to regulate glucose levels. Instead if they control their diet it will be more beneficial for them.
Having the right kind of diet is essential in controlling blood sugar level in the body. You should try to control diabetes with the right kind of diet along with medications.
Most of the people are under the false impression that diabetes affects only adults and not children. However this is a misconception. Diabetes can affect people of any age. Anyone can become a victim of diabetes if he or she is careless regarding diet.
Sweet foods bring the highest risk of diabetes specially the artificially sweetened ones. However people with diabetes can take natural sweets like fruits in moderation. Anything which is taken in a limit should not harmful.
Even though diabetic patients can eat fruits, but it is recommended that they stay away from those fruits which are high in glucose content. Similarly, dry fruit and fruits juices are not recommended for a diabetic person.
Some of the foods which are proven to be helpful for diabetic patients are:
1. Avocado - It is a fruit which has ability to lower the cholesterol level in the body. It is also helpful in production of insulin. Avocado's are rich in potassium and magnesium which helps in bringing down the blood pressure in a person.
2. Cherries - They are good sources of antioxidants. They help in increasing the insulin levels in the body and thereby maintaining the blood sugar levels.
3. Grapefruits - They are proven to be helpful in reducing fat in the body and regulating glucose levels.
4. Figs - Fresh figs are proven to be helpful for diabetic patients. They contain many essential nutrients and minerals, so they are good for the health. However, dried figs should be avoided as they contain high concentration of sugar in them.
5. Apples - We have all heard the saying 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'. Apple are good for everybody including diabetic patients. However they should be eaten in moderation.
6. Oats - They have antioxidant properties and help in stabilizing blood sugar. Therefore they are good for diabetics.
7. Beans - They are rich in fiber and help in lowering cholesterol levels. They also help in regulating blood sugar levels.
