Buzzing ears, hearing Tinnitus sounds and noises in your ear, ear-ringing - they are all ways to describe the condition of Tinnitus. Did you know that there are literally millions of people all over the world that are going through this ordeal day in and day out? Believe me, you are most definitely not alone with this problem.
However, the knowledge of not being the only person with a choir in your head doesn't really help to cope with your ringing ears on a daily basis, so let's look at it from a practical point of view and discuss some tips which help to determine what you should do and what you definitely shouldn't do to help manage your Tinnitus.
1 - Don't panic
Tinnitus is usually not part of an illness and not a sign of some serious condition, but is often just a temporary condition. There is no reason to panic, but every reason to feel that your body is warning you.
2 - Get to know your body
Be still and listen. It could well be that your body wants you to know about something that isn't functioning the way it should, so listen to it.
3 - Check-up time
If you have the slightest doubt that what you are experiencing is not normal, do go and see a specialist interested and experienced in Tinnitus. An ENT (Ear/Nose/Throat) specialist should be your first choice.
4 - Do review your medication
It is well known that certain medications can cause ear ringing symptoms, so do let your doctor know what else you are taking. And I am not just talking about your prescription medicines, but even vitamins or herbal supplements can have a negative effect on some people, so let's not forget those.
5 - Keep your wits about you
Don't believe anybody telling you that there is nothing you can do about your buzzing ears. It really is very rare that you end up living with this condition forever. For the vast majority of people, it will only last for a certain period of time and then disappears again, often for good. If you don't feel that you get the right answers from the professionals you are consulting, do not be afraid to see somebody else. Never give up.
6 - Spy on your Tinnitus
Yes, spy on it. Just like a detective, keep track of what you are putting into your body and at what times the noises are worse than normal. Try writing a diary to find out exactly what triggers the Tinnitus sounds. Then compare and look for similarities. The easiest way to do this is to, for example, stop eating certain foods for a while and see if it makes any difference to your buzzing ears.
7 - Newsflash
There is currently a lot going on with regards to Tinnitus. New research results are being published all the time, so do be interested in the news to make sure, you don't miss the one thing you could have done in order to get rid of the choir in your head earlier. Don't be afraid to test out new developments - it might just be the right treatment for YOUR ears.
Most importantly however, never give up and never lose hope and there is every reason that you will get on top of those disturbing Tinnitus sounds in your ear eventually.
