Depression and Diet, Are they Linked?
Words: 470 | Date: Thu, 13 May 2010

A new type of virus was found to be a common inhabitant of our brain. Bornavirus was found in 30% of the people tested, residing in the emotional centre of brain. It causes inflammation in that area, leading to clinical depression in 1 out of 6 people. Simple, short-term antiviral medication was able to completely cure this type of depression without support from either psychotherapy or antidepressant drugs.

This very simple story shows us one very interesting thing. That inflammation is directly linked and possibly causing depression. Maybe our lifestyle can produce severe inflammation in our body? The food we eat every day actually results in generalized inflammation in the whole body, not just the brain. Depression is only one of the conditions correlated with inflammation though. Obesity, autism, cancer, autoimmune diseases and even cardiovascular conditions are all associated with chronic inflammation in the body.

We consume many toxic foods that can cause inflammation. Heavily processed foods such as refined carbs, vegetable oils as well as factory meat and farm raised fish, all contain very toxic substances. Factory raised cattle have up to 500% more saturated fats accumulated in their tissues than the healthier grass fed friends. Farm raised salmon has a ratio of omega 6 and 3 of 20:1. A naturally raised, wild fish has a ratio of 3:1 which is exactly what the human body needs. Omega 6 fatty acids, in such massive quantities have severe inflammatory action. Arachidonic acid, an omega 6 fatty acid, is a highly toxic molecule, abundant in all factory meats and fish. Refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, bagels, doughnuts, cookies and so many other products completely throw out of balance human metabolism; turn on inflammation and fat producing genes. The first sign of inflammation? Fat around the waist. Your body is inflamed.

Want a natural cure for depression? Switch to raw vegetables and fruits, eat grass fed beef and wild fish only. It is imperative to eat healthy oils from nuts, seeds as well as olive and coconut oil and organic butter. The brain cells are covered with big amount of fats, it is absolutely necessary to give it what it needs. Eliminate fats from your diet and you get impaired cognitive function, depression, lack of concentration and reduced athletic performance among others.

Depression is not a Prozac deficiency syndrome. It is a result of a highly toxic and refined diet that is lacking fresh and natural produce full of vitamins and minerals. A natural and holistic diet can be very efficient in healing depression. The body is a perfect piece of equipment we are gifted with. Its innate wisdom can handle and eventually heal most diseases when we care to provide it with the right raw materials. When you respect and love your body, you unlock its truly amazing potential.
