Has your makeup collection begun to collect dust?

Were you still studying for school exams the last time you bought new colors and your 10th reunion is coming up?

If so, then it's probably time for an update. You may not think you need it, but all you have to do is ask a friend what she thinks of your look. If you get a lot of "Um...well..." hesitation in response, it's truly time for an update.

Besides, just like buying new clothes, updating your makeup collection can make you feel good and help you see yourself in a whole new light.

The first and easiest way to begin updating your makeup collection is by sorting through it. Dump out that drawer and start weeding things out.

A good litmus test for keeping or pitching a product is to ask yourself when the last time was that you wore it. If you can't remember, get rid of it.

You might also want to ask yourself if the product you're considering throwing out fits your current lifestyle.

If you work in a conservative setting, you might have little use for sparkly eye shadow or day-glow pink lip gloss (unless you have an interesting nightlife). Toss out anything that doesn't fit your current style.

It's also wise to change out at least part of your makeup collection twice a year. Since your face gets more sun in the summertime, your normal foundation might look too pale.

The reverse is true in the winter. Since most makeup products are only good for about six months, you might consider tossing the opposite season's shade.

Keep the same idea in mind when it comes to color. Bright, bold colors are best for warm months while deeper tones are best for winter.

You can store everything that's not in season to clear out some space in your makeup bag or try to use up as much as you can during the current season.

Finally, the fun part! Once you've cleared out the clutter from your makeup collection, it's time to shop.

You don't have to be a makeup pro to stock up on new colors and shades. Look through magazines to find colors you're interested in, then simply sample those colors until you find what looks good on your skin.

Take a friend along with you and ask for her opinion as you go. Before you know it you'll be looking less last decade and more hip, and up-to-date all the time!
