Dieting is one of the most common things in America, since most people are fat. But, even healthy people diet as well. There are all kinds of diets. Diets to add muscle. Diets to keep fat off. Diets to improve health. And so on.
This cannot be further from the truth. Dieting means only one thing, and that is watching what you eat. Even healthy people go on a diet. Prince Charles of England is on an organic diet, and body builders will be on a high protein diet. If you want to reduce weight you will be on a restricted diet that is all. This restriction is not on the quantity of food, only on the quality. Every food item contains calories, which are units of energy. The key is to eat low energy dense foods that fill your stomach up. A simple illustration will help you understand this better.
One large chocolate sundae or shake typically gives around 700 calories. A McDonald's big mac has 900 calories; whereas one half of a roasted chicken breast is only around a 150 Calories. If you put that in terms of fat, 3500 calories is one pound of fat. It is actually quite easy to go a whole day with a full stomach without ever exceeding your calorie limit if you know what to eat.
The problem arises when you don't want to give up on something. If for example you are the sort of person who has an ice cream after dinner every day, it is going to be a little difficult for you to give it up, and compensating for this extra 500 to 700 calories is going to be difficult. You will probably have to skip one meal entirely and pick on the other one simply to satisfy your craving for sugar.
Being sensible when it comes to dieting is what is needed. You would not be dieting unless you thought that your health needed it in the first place. Finding alternatives that will give you what you want while making sure that your health does not suffer in the process like using alternatives for sugar whenever possible, or going in for low carb drinks or even making your own ice-cream using "safe" food is how you should think. Dieting is just as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. As famous Mr Somebody or the other said "It is all in the mind."
