How To Live With Heart Failure

A number of people have experienced heart failure. Heart failure does not necessarily mean that the heart is unable to pump blood anymore, but rather, it means that the heart will experience certain problems when it comes to supplying and pumping blood into your system.

Once you have experienced heart failure, it is more difficult to go about your daily routine the same way that you would use. You will become more cautious, sometimes even to a point that you may no longer be able to function normally or properly. This should not be the case, especially if you know how to cope with your heart failure. Here are a couple of things that you could do.

1. Rehabilitate Your Heart

Before you can go back home, you first need to undergo a rehabilitation program for your heart just so you can reduce the chances and risk of you experiencing heart failure again in the future. This will usually involve some form of physical exercises, counselling and even education just so you would understand and know what you need to do in order to be able to live a healthier life.

2. Take Your Time

Once you are able to get back home, don't be surprised if you are still not a 100% ready to get back into your routine. You would still feel a bit tired. This is just normal. What you need to do is take some time off and allow your body to heal itself fully before you are able to do most of the normal things that you used to do. Ask your family members, friends, or even neighbours, to provide you with some assistance to perform certain things, like cooking, cleaning, and doing the groceries.

3. Keep A Record

Once you have begun to settle in to your routine, you need to start keeping a record of your progress and condition. This will help you monitor how your body is doing, and how it is able to cope with your recovery. If you notice that your body is not recovering fast enough, then it might be a good idea to give it some more time to recover.

4. Have An Emergency Plan

Having an emergency plan is something that you must always have, especially during this time that you are still recovering. There might be some things that could happen during your recovery that could affect your progress, so it is important that you know what to look for, and know when to call the doctor for help. Some of the things that you should probably take note of are the frequency of angina that you might experience, weight gain of 2.3 kilos or more in a span of one week, shortness of breath, and swollen legs and ankles, just to name a few.

5. Consult Your Doctor

As you progress in your recovery, you should be able to notice that there are more and more activities that you would be able to perform. Before you decide to go back to doing the usual activities that you used to do, like return to work, do more physical activities, travel, or even do any sexual activity, it is best that you consult your doctor first.
