Looking After The Ears Of Your Staff
Words: 446 | Date: Fri, 27 Aug 2010

Looking after your employee's health should be a top priority for any employer. There are many professions where ear protection would be a useful safety tool that will make workers feel more comfortable and employers seem more caring. The obvious jobs include things like construction site workers, railway workers, factory workers, and military roles. However there are many other working environments where ear protection may be needed. A rule of thumb outlined by the Health and Safety Executive states that if your employee's need to shout to hear one and other from 2m apart at any part of the day, they may need to use ear defenders.

Bars

Bars can be extremely noisy places, especially whenever there is live music playing. Full time bar workers who are faced with high music levels on a regular basis would definitely benefit from the use of ear protection. As bar workers need to hear the orders from customers, filtered ear plugs may be a good option as they allow the wearer to block out loud noises such as music whilst still hearing speech.

Theatres

Theatre workers often see the same play every night for months on end. This can be a lot of strain on the ear if the play contains loud music or random loud sounds set to shock the audience. Earplugs can make workers feel more comfortable as well as protect their ears from harm

Shooting Grounds

Visitors to shooting grounds are forced to wear ear protection when practising their aim and fire. The shooting teachers that work directly on the shooting grounds also wear protection from the guns loud blasts. However there may be other workers on shooting grounds that could benefit from wearing. For example, those working at the ticket desk, shop or those looking after equipment may also need ear protection if they are to be around shooting all day.

Mechanics Some of the tools used by mechanics can be very loud indeed. Whilst they may not use them all day every day it is important for their ear safety that they are effectively protected when they do. Providing each of your employers with a set of ear plugs will help to reduce the risk of damage to their hearing.

Track Workers

Similarly to shooting grounds, there may be many workers at motorbike and car racing tracks that need ear protection however have been overlooked. Getting a good assessment of sound levels across all areas of your grounds is a great way of working out who needs what in terms of ear protection.
