There are certain foods out there that claim to be "superfoods" and among them is an interesting food called organic spirulina. But before we talk about organic spirulina, let's first discuss what a superfood even is. A superfood is a food that has all, or virtually all, of the chemicals vital to human life, things like vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Among the superfoods are things like bee pollen, which is very nutritious, but very difficult for the body to process. So what about spirulina? Spirulina is a form of edible algae that grows naturally in different regions of the world. It's classified a blue-green algae, and it's a microscopic life form. Organic spirulina is just spirulina that's grown to a higher standard of organic and natural methods. So why is spirulina or any other kind of algae said to be a superfood? There are two large reasons. Because of the fact that spirulina algae are very small, each of them is packed full of all the nutrients it needs to sustain and replicate itself. Unlike normal plants like trees, which have different large systems like bark, leaves, and roots, algae are very small and full of things like chlorophyll, which is a very helpful substance for human life.
Organic spirulina has many benefits, apart from being nutritious. Here are a few:
1. Chlorophyll. Like we discussed in the first section, organic spirulina is high in concentrations of chlorophyll. This is because, in being a microscopic plant, each algae microbe needs its own chlorophyll in order to metabolize energy from the sun, which is where they draw their energy from. What this means is that algae generally have large amounts of chlorophyll. Why is that good for humans? Though the daily dietary value for chlorophyll intake hasn't been established, studies have shown that chlorophyll does one thing very well, it detoxifies the body from heavy metal pollution, which is very beneficial. A variety of degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimers disease, seem to have a correlation to heavy metals within the body, so taking regular dietary doses of chlorophyll is definitely a good idea. Chlorophyll chemically binds with heavy metals, allowing the body to remove and expel them. In our current age of pesticides, smoggy air, preservatives in everything, and other toxins, chlorophyll is definitely a good idea for longevity.
2. Protein. Organic Spirulina contains very high concentrations of animal protein, making it a perfect supplement for vegetarians and vegans. But beyond that, the protein in organic spirulina is what's known as a complete protein, which means that it has all of the amino acids essential to human life. This is very difficult to find anywhere, especially for vegans and vegetarians.
3. Essential Fatty Acids. Organic spirulina is rich in many of the Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids, but most notably are the Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. Both of these fatty acids are difficult to find in the Standard American Diet, and are generally only eaten in fish. They are very beneficial to brain function, proper chemical balance in the body, and a wide variety of other things. Research has shown that many people are deficient in both of these essential fatty acids.
4. Vitamins and Minerals. Organic spirulina contains a wide variety of different vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorous, Selenium, Zinc, and many more.
