Many chemicals are utilized in the manufacture and development of personal care products, which poses an increasing concern for women in particular. Choosing a natural and organic hair salon is a wise and safe choice, to avoid unnecessary exposure to a variety of toxins.
In its final report on the safety of sodium lauryl sulfate, the Journal of the American College of Toxicology notes that this ingredient has a "degenerative effect on the cell membranes because of its protein denaturing properties." What's more, the journal adds, "high levels of skin penetration may occur at even low use concentration." Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as anti-microbial preservatives in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics products, including underarm deodorants. Parabens are absorbed through intact skin and from the gastrointestinal tract and blood. Six different parabens (in measurable quantities) have been identified in biopsy samples taken from breast tumors. The particular parabens were found in relative concentrations that closely parallel their use in the synthesis of cosmetic products.
Parabens have also been found in almost all urine samples examined from a demographically diverse sample of adults in the U.S. Parabens have been shown to be estrogen mimickers, binding to the cellular estrogen receptor (ER). They also increase the expression of genes that are usually regulated by estradiol and cause human breast tumor cells (MCF-7 cells) to grow and proliferate in vitro.
The only professional hair care product on the market now which is both sulphate- and paraben-free is Kevin Murphy, originally from Australia. Strict ingredient standards are readily met by the company's U.S. manufacturing plant.
Hair stylists themselves who constantly have their hands in shampoo and conditioners all day long are potentially at a higher risk of developing irritations, sensitivities and certain cancers. These and many other synthetic chemicals are completely unnecessary, and their use creates a negative effect on the body. Because these components are inexpensive to create, many companies who are only focused on bottom-line profits tend to choose such chemicals. Educating ourselves on these and other organic and natural alternatives would not only be beneficial for the environment, but for the personal health of an individual.
Whenever possible, look for natural and organic hair salons in your area, or else educate yourself on the risks of exposure to such chemicals.
