The Sad Effects of Alcohol

Most of us that have dealt with depression on a regular basis have at one time or another tried to drink away our problems or at least have had a glass or two of wine in order to help us to sleep better. Did you realize, however, that alcohol does not help with your depression in any way, shape or form? As a matter of fact, it may actually do more to hurt your depression than to help it. Why is that the case?

Wine does help the heart to be merry to a certain extent and a little bit of alcohol can help to lift our mood on a temporary basis. Regardless of how good we feel whenever we are drinking, however, the fact of the matter is that alcohol is a depressant and not a stimulant. The last thing that we need whenever we are depressed is a mind altering drug that is going to make us more depressed. Yes, a drink or two can help you to forget about your problems while you are drinking but the end of the matter will be much worse than where you started.

This is also true if you drink a little bit of wine or other alcoholic beverage before going to sleep in order to help yourself sleep better at night. In actuality, you are altering your sleep and not getting the deep sleep that you really need. Yes, you may drift off to sleep faster but you are unable to wake refreshed whenever you drink too much at night. It is a much better idea for you to find a more relaxing method of falling asleep, such as having a glass of warm milk or perhaps reading some light poetry. You will sleep more soundly and wake refreshed in the morning.

In moderation, alcohol can help you to be more relaxed and to be able to deal with the day-to-day problems that you have. If you abuse it, however, the true depressant quality of the drug really begins to show through. Make sure that you don't get fooled by the temporary effects that you experience, you will end up more depressed and with less quality sleep in the long run. There are many other things that you can do to help to cure your depression naturally, and without the mood altering effects of alcohol. Hopefully this article will hep you.
