As a person who researches many cosmetic medical procedures, I get questions all the time from people wanting to know the ins and outs of laser hair removal. I've decided to answer a few of the most-asked questions here.
1.) What exactly is laser hair removal?
This term refers to the technology resulting of decades and decades of photoepilation and laser research and studies. Described in layman's terms, a laser is merely a synchronized, concentrated beam of light that generates intense light, power and heat. Laser hair removal technologies utilize this intense light from the laser and focus it on a specific hair follicle. The hair follicle absorbs the light, as well as the resulting heat, which then destroys that hair and follicle at the root.
Think of it like cutting down a tree. By shaving, you cut the tree down and leave a stump for the tree to grow back. With waxing, you eliminate the trunk, and the stump, but the roots are still there and allow the hair can still grow back. With Laser Hair Removal, you eliminate the trunk, the stump, and the roots, so that the hair is less likely to grow back.
2.) What are the benefits of Laser Hair Removal?
a. The procedure is non-invasive. There no knives, needles or chemicals used.
b. The procedure is very quick as compared to many other hair removal alternatives.
c. The procedure is highly effective in removing hair from large areas of the body including the back, arms, and legs
d. The effects of laser hair removal are long-lasting and in many cases permanent
e. The procedure is far less painful than many other procedures such as waxing.
f. The laser hair removal industry is safe and regulated. If you find the right doctor, long term side effects are unlikely
3.) Am I a candidate for Scottsdale laser hair removal?
The procedure is not for everyone. Different people with different skin types and different hair colors and textures will get different results. All hair removal is NOT the same. During treatment, the laser must be custom set to your skin type and/or hair color for the best possible results. Laser hair removal works best on fair skin and coarse dark hair because the laser can more easily find and target based upon the contrast of the hair color on the skin color. Laser hair removal does not work as well on blond hairs, red hair, and grey hair.
Your physician may prescribe certain skin treatments and precautions to be used on your skin to prevent irritation and ensure your skin is most receptive to the procedure. If your physician suggests a "cookie cutter" approach to your laser hair removal treatment, do not walk the other way...run.
