Words: 533 | Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2010

You are not alone if you are trying to find out the pros and cons when creating a successful diet for colitis. Whilst every sufferer's case is slightly different, there are some general rules to follow including the need to understand that how we live and what diet we consume can be a contributory factor whether symptoms make a fleeting appearance or signal the start of a full relapse.

It is obvious that a someone suffering from colitis wants to have good health, yet with a little consideration about daily diet they can contribute to a better chance for staying in remission. If the body is being fed with the correct foods, the risk of colitis symptoms appearing and perhaps the onslaught of a full relapse can be reduced. It is vital that action is taken to keep inflammation in the large colon in check and a correct diet for colitis does play an important role in achieving this. Whilst maybe alarming, inflammation does in fact occur naturally as the human body creates inflammatory factors in realtion to the immune system, which is the body's self defence system.

Yet what are the consequences when this natural process becomes too active? It can result in the body being overwhelmed, resulting in the immune system going on the attack. A colitis sufferer can reduce the likelihood of this occurring by undertaking simple daily steps such as a balanced nutritious diet, sufficient exercise and ensuring that excessive stress levels are recognised as such and methods adopted to ensure that stress does not play an integral part in their life.

What then should sufferers be looking out for in a beneficial diet for colitis? Those in remission should ensure that they consume enough fresh fruit and vegetables but ensuring that skins are removed if required. The importance of this has to be recognised as such foods are packed with vitamins, minerals plus antioxidants that are efffective in keeping inflammation down. In addition to this, anti-inflammatory oils such as omega-3 fatty acids found in fish are excellent not just for reducing inflammation but also for overall health including joint laxity. Animal products such as egg yolks and chicken contain arachidonic acid which is a type of fat that is important for a healthy and balanced diet but does contain inflammatory properties. It is therefore wise to limit the amount eaten.

The type of foods to be wary of that can be a contributory factor in inflammation are sugar laden snacks, manufactured and refined foods plus the siren blaring fried foods. Once consumed, they break down quickly and turn into sugar, thus increasing the prospect of inflammation and thus their consumption should be limited or avoided altogether especially when symptoms are active.

Having to deal with colitis is not easy but by adopting some basic rules with regard to a balanced diet for colitis and how to live with the disease on a daily basis, the person can ensure that they are contributing to the effort to try and maintain good health and reduce the chances of symptoms and a relapse appearing from being self induced.
