Why Should I be Tested for Tinnitus?
Words: 558 | Date: Wed, 11 Aug 2010

If you have ringing in your ears, if you get dizzy, if you hear other strange noises, having a doctor test you for tinnitus is the smart way to start your journey of recovery because the ringing in your ears can be caused by a large number of factors. Having some tests run and getting an actual diagnosis will start you on the right foot.

Each individual patient can have different symptoms and the sounds they hear can be different as well. You might hear a swishing, a whistling, a buzzing, or a throbbing sound, and as many different sounds that are possible to be heard, there are that many different causes especially when your tinnitus can come from other, non-related medical problems.

Make sure your doctor also tests you for Meniere's disease. It will affect your inner ear and may cause some dizziness. This is one of the easier problems to diagnose, but unless you catch it early, it is not always curable. This is also a male dominate ailment. It affects more men than women.

Whether your doctor does a tinnitus test or not, you need to make sure that you inform him/her about any other medical conditions that you have because tinnitus can be caused by other medical conditions, and she/ he (your doctor) needs to rule out other health problems that could be causing the ringing or buzzing that you're experiencing, things like diabetes, high blood pressure, inner ear infections, and many more. If your doctor determines that your tinnitus isn't coming from other medical conditions he/she may find that your tinnitus is coming from an outside source.

There are many different causes for tinnitus coming from outside sources, like loud music at a concert or in tight places like your car, loud machinery at work, or fireworks on the fourth of July, just to name a few. Exposing yourself to these kinds of conditions can be dangerous for your hearing. Even after all of this, your doctor might determine it's not the cause of your tinnitus, because sometimes they just can't find a cause. Of course this makes it very hard to treat the problem. It's a lot easier to treat tinnitus if you know why or how it occurred.

I'm sure to some, tinnitus doesn't seem like a big deal...a little ringing in your ears...but if you had to suffer thru a day or a week or a month of never ending noise in your ears, noise so loud you can't hear yourself think, you might feel a little differently. If the patient is suffering from what is known as objective tinnitus, the doctor can actually hear the noise that is coming from the patient. If the doctor can hear the ringing, can you imagine what it sounds like to the patient? Some individuals have tinnitus for long, painful periods of time and if their doctor was unable to find a cause and unsure of a treatment, there are other remedies available now.

Tinnitus has been treated quite successfully thru homeopathic remedy options, like the use of herbal remedies, acupuncture & acupressure, hypnosis as well as chiropractic. They have also come out with some new, very unique sound therapies that are showing great results.
