If we look back to our childhood years, one thing that was important and significant, it was the wooden rocking horses that we used as out playmates. There is just something special about getting on the horse and starting that back and forth movement that over joys children and takes them into their own imaginary and adventurous world, a place where they are heroes and are capable of doing anything.
The feeling that children get from riding their rocking horses is unmatchable and irreplaceable. This tends to be the reason for children loving their rocking horses so much and considering them a major part of their life. This has created a whole childhood culture that revolves around wooden rocking horses.
There used to be rocking chairs and cribs for the small children, in which, mothers used to put their babies to sleep. Then someone developed a rocking horse on the same pattern from the wood. This rocking horse was made of wood, and it had rockers just like the rocking chair. This toy gained immense popularity. Even the King Charles the first is said to have ridden this wooden rocking horse in his childhood.
Since plastic had not been invented yet, the only material that was available for manufacture of children toys was wood. Metal was considered too heavy for children, although several historical pieces are available that were made in metal.
The rocking horse has known to gain popularity in the Georgian and the Victorian era. There were many styles, and designs introduced in the rocking industry. Initially, they were very coarse wooden rocking horses. Then with the use of technology, the thing was more refined. It was embellished with the saddle, and the reins.
Thus, it happened, the wooden rocking horse became forever embedded in the memories of a child as an item that was an assurance of enjoyment.
Due to the change in technology, and lifestyle of people, the popularity of this toy started decreasing. There even came a time when it totally disappeared. However, some of the artisans have taken up the responsibility to restore many unique wooden rocking horses. You will find many rocking horses in the museums as well.
