No doubt when you first had a website developed for your business, you were very excited when it 'launched' the first day. You expected thousands of visitors to flock to the site during the first month. And you were very disappointed when this did not happen. Below are a number of steps everyone can follow to increase site traffic for most types of websites.
The majority of website traffic still comes from search engines. Before you even submit your website to the search engines however, there is something you should remember: they love good quality, relevant content.
Whatever the subject of your website, there should be more than a couple of Flash animations and an order form. There should be relevant content containing the keywords for the industry in which you are involved.
Let's assume you have a camera shop. In the good old days of Alta Vista, you could have a 2-page website created, submit the URL to the big name search engines and virtually immediately start to get tons of traffic. This is no longer possible. With hundreds of millions of websites on the Internet, the search engines now sift the good sites from the bad ones by looking for relevant, top quality content.
Tell people how to pack their belongings. Explain to them how insurance works and why they need it. Let your website be the place they come to to get valuable information about everything involved with moving. The search engines will pick up that you have quality content and give you a higher ranking in the search results and with that will come more visitors.
There's many other ways to increase the number of visitors to your site. One other example is to join an online forum where visitors talk about the industry in which you're involved. Become a member and proceed to provide free, quality advice to people who have questions.
To come back to the example of the furniture store: you could help people in the forums with the same questions referred to above and then send them to your website for even more detailed information.
Over time you'll become known as somebody who doesn't just take, but are also prepared to give. Someone to look up to for advice when you consider buying new furniture. And many people will start to click on your URL at the bottom of your forum posts.
Then there are the social media websites. Once again they are all free and you can build up quite a following on places like Twitter and Facebook if you show that you know your subject. And once again you can get a lot of free exposure for your website.
There are of course many websites where you can place paid advertisements for your site. Google and Yahoo both have such paid advertisement options. There are also numerous smaller search engines and groups of websites with similar programs that work out cheaper than the two big ones.
Don't expect miracles: To increase site traffic is a long term process that is never really over. Filling your site with relevant information is only the start of building a loyal visitor base.
