Recommended Steps to Calculate Traffic Based on Keywords
Words: 420 | Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2010

When searching for fresh new keywords for your website, always bear in mind that the number of searches shown in the keyword analyzer does not really show the real numbers of visitors to your site. Furthermore, the "estimated" traffic statistic shown may not be applicable to your website, especially if you're just at the start of your journey.

Given this, how do you know which keywords to use in order to get the most traffic from the search engines? There are six (6) other suggested steps apart from the keyword analysis tool:

Select several optimised web pages in your industry Choose several website that competes with yours and look at their ranking. In most situations, there are keyword phrases that pull in most of the traffic. Now, it might be tempting to compete head-on but this tactic is not always recommended. Opting for secondary keywords that still drives traffic would be a good choice.

Use keyword research tool
For marketers who want to concentrate their efforts in Google, the free Adwords research tool is very effective. It provides all the necessary information regarding searcher behaviour when they're using this search engine. If you want to get a more comprehensive view of consumers' overall internet behaviour, tools such as Keyword Discovery and Wordtracker provides data from multiple search engines. It can provide quite precise estimates at any time.

Calculate Traffic to Search ratios
Type in your keywords into the search box in the keyword tool to see the monthly volume you can potentially get. Then calculate the ratio of your actual traffic against the monthly search volume. Now that you have this figure, you can get the "Traffic to Search" (TSR) ratio. This is the relationship between the total search volumes for the selected keyword against the traffic you receive.

Get other search terms
Once you have the "Traffic to Search" ratio, you can choose ANY term you want into the keyword tool. Multiply the search volume of that keyword term to the TSR ratio and you will get a general idea of expected traffic to your website. Bear in mind that this is hardly an accurate way to calculate actual traffic. But it will give you a good estimate of the results based on historical performance. The actual TSR can also differ using different keywords. If you want to do a fast keyword research though, this is definitely a good way to start things right.
