While the concept of focus and setting goals can turn many people off, this talks about that with a bit of a new twist. Here the focus is "on" the business without being "in" the business. A bit of a switch in thought process wouldn't you say?

When a guru or public speaker wants you to work on setting goals and focusing on your business, lots of times it is about increasing sales 10% or raising pricing 4%. Or perhaps the focus of setting goals is how to "save time" and increase your productivity by I hour a day. I've never yet seen someone walking around with those extra hours trapped in a bottle to be used in the future.

Talking about focus "on" your business is something completely different. This is where you look at what your business does, how it does it and what tools does it use to do what it does. And in order to do this, you need to remove yourself from some of the doing in order to look at the overall picture.

How you get the time to focus on your business is up to you. There are plenty of systems out there to help you find that hour or two. Or you could simply delegate something off your plate to someone else. They most likely will handle better than you think that they might.

Before you get to set goals, simply look at how you do what you do. Is it done as efficiently as possible? Are there things that can be changed and save time or money? Where is the business now? Where do you want it in 1, 5 or 10 years? And most importantly of all, what are your goals and how is the business helping you to reach them?

This type of focus is different than many are taught to look at a business. But it is critical if you want to grow a business that meets not only your needs but also how your company can grow successfully in changing economic markets.

Working on setting goals for yourself and a business is something that you can do alone or with the help of professionals in the field. While you may not want to spend the money, their ability to help you focus and reach the end of setting goals may well be faster and easier for the small fee that they charge.

The bottom line is that by taking some time to stop working in your business so much and switch to working on your business can well be the difference between a profitable business and freedom to do as you choose and one that has none of those perks.
