How To Care For Your Karate Uniform!
Words: 510 | Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010

If there's one thing that comes to mind when we think of martial arts and karate, it's the image of the white uniform with the colored belt. Even though the white karate gi was introduced only 100 years ago, one can hardly envision a karate class without the students lined up in white. However, as with all clothing, these pristine uniforms can show signs of wear and tear if not properly taken care of. Karate uniforms should be kept neat and clean, and caring for them can be more difficult than simply putting them in the washing machine.

The first thing to do is to make certain your karate uniform is properly stored when not in use. Ideally it should be hanging in a closet rather than folded into a drawer. When not hung up or put safely away accidents can happen that may tear or stain your karate gi. To be on the safe side, get into the habit of properly hanging up your uniform when you aren't using it, and make certain it's put away clean. Your karate uniform requires a little more attention than your jeans and t-shirts. Place your gi in the washing machine with a good, strong detergent and bleach, which will help it keep the bright, clean white color. Be careful with the amount of bleach you use, however, to prevent your uniform from becoming damaged in the wash.

Ideally your karate gi should be washed after every lesson. Place it in the washing machine when you get back from class. If you don't, the sweat and dirt of a day's use will settle into the fabric which makes it difficult to clean. Prompt washing can prevent the chance of permanent stains. The first time you wash your karate uniform, be warned that it will shrink. This is because your karate gi is a cotton garment, which is why you are advised to purchase a uniform slightly larger than your own size. As with all cotton clothing there may be a risk of shrinkage with every wash, so make certain to pay attention when you clean your uniform.

For a uniform that has somehow managed to tear or fray at the hems, you can use a sewing machine to fix the problem. You can even add a patch or some attractive decoration onto your karate gi. However, speak first to the master of your training hall or school to make certain that your additions meet with their approval.

The belt, too, is an important part of the uniform. According to tradition, you should never wash the belt, but different dojos have different opinions on this matter. When washing a colored belt remember to not use a detergent that will fade or dull the color, and make certain to follow all washing instructions. Taking care of your karate uniform isn't difficult. Just use common sense and remember to properly store your uniform when not in use to make certain your karate gi always looks good.
