A Short History of the Chaise Lounge
Words: 455 | Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2010

The chaise lounge was originally called a chaise longue. Derived from French, the term means "long chair" in English. It is believed that because long chairs were used mainly for lounging that the word "longue" was misspelled.

But it really doesn't matter how you spell it because chaise lounges are classic pieces of furniture that will enhance virtually any area - indoors or out. And not only are they comfortable, they are stylish as well.

Chaise Lounges in Ancient Times

A chaise lounge is essentially a combination of a day bed and a chair. The original design comes out of ancient Egypt. Centuries later Greek artists showed their gods and goddesses relaxing on what look like chaise lounges.

These comfortable furnishings were enjoyed in other parts of the world as well. The Olmec were a Pre-Columbian Mexican civilization. They had a version of the chaise lounge, as did ancient African civilizations.

Chaise Lounges in France

The chaise lounge that we know today originated in France during the sixteenth century. Looking remarkably like today's furniture, the design was essentially an elongated chair with a backrest. This four legged chair was built so that people could comfortably rest on their backs instead on their sides.

Although materials evolved over time, the original chaise longues were often made of curved wood, rattan or wooden caning.

Chaise Lounges during the 18th Century

Contrasting elements and asymmetry where characteristic of the eighteenth century Rococo period. At this time these lounges evolved into elegant pieces of furniture that aristocracy and royalty incorporated into their household design.

Expensive fabrics, rare woods, beautifully carved arm rests and feet were typical of the "long chairs" that became status symbols of the period.

Century Chaise Lounges in the United States

It is believed that the "chaise longue" debuted in the United States during the 1830s. Once in America the design once again evolved. Over the years materials such as tubular steel and plastic were included in their construction. Polywood also became a very popular material.

Although initially used only indoors, furniture designers started to create special chaise lounges that were designed to withstand the elements because of American's love of the outdoors. Now you can see various interpretations of this ancient design grace patios, swimming pools, gazebos, gardens, decks, and porches throughout the nation.

With the advent of the Industrial Age these pieces of furniture have become very easy to manufacture and have become very economically priced. And now the modern chaise lounge has become one of the most attractive and useful furnishings available.
