Explore Mendoza's Wine Country When You Learn Spanish in Argentina
Words: 488 | Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2010

When you are attending Spanish school in Mendoza, there are lots of activities in the region that are not to be missed. Mendoza is sometimes considered to be Argentina's most livable city. There are lots of green open spaces, beautiful historic architecture and an easygoing pace of life. The city also has an enjoyable cultural life and delicious food and wine. Who wouldn't like to get a glass of wine after a long day of classes? Luckily, this region happens to have some of the world's best wine. This is a perk that you should definitely take advantage of when you learn Spanish in Argentina. You can take a short trip to the region's wineries and not only taste some world famous wines, but also get some insight into Argentina's winemaking history.

One site not to be missed is the wineries of Maipu, which are in the eastern suburbs of the city. This area has a lot of different wineries and most welcome visitors for wine tastings and tours. One of the largest wineries in the region is called Bodegas Lopez. Open since 1898 the winery is full of history. Much of the wine produced at this winery is consumed right in Argentina. Tours of Bodegas Lopez are highly educational and last an entire hour long! They also give tours in English. However, it is important to note that if you are attending Spanish school in Mendoza, you might want to give a vineyard tour a try to complement your education.

Another winery to check out is Antigua Bodega Giol, which is close by Bodegas Lopez. This means that you can visit the two sites on the same day. Although Antigua Bodega Giol used to be a major operation, it is now a wine cooperative. There is also a museum dedicated to wine called the Museo Nacional del Vino y la Vendimia, which is located in a mansion. At this institution you can get an extensive insight into Maipu's winemaking history.

There are also wineries in Mendoza's suburbs, for example, Lujan de Cuyo wine district. It is easy to take public transportation from Mendoza or gather a group of friends together to hire a taxi. Bodega y Cavas de Weinert is a winery that is owned by Brazilians, and it is a major producer or wine. Nearby is also Bodega Nieto Senetiner, which is a winery that dates back to 1904 and specializes in Malbec. However, the facilities have been recently renovated and modernized.

Most wineries are open 9-5 on weekdays and Saturday mornings; however, it is always a good idea to call in advance for reservations. One of the many benefits that you will receive when you learn Spanish in Argentina is to enjoy the country's world-renowned food and wine. Don't forget, the wine tastes even better when you get a chance to see how it is made!

ECELA's Spanish school in Mendoza is in a restored mansion close to the center of the small, Andean city. Apart from Mendoza's vineyards, when you learn Spanish in Argentina you will also have outdoor mountain sports such as rafting and snowboarding.
