Going personally to the embassy would probably be the least of your choices, unless you have a lot of funds to go around with. Phone updates would probably be the next best thing that you can use. However, be ready, as a call to the embassy can actually cost you around three bucks per minute.

Another option you can go with is checking your application online. This one is by far the easiest, since all you have to do is to log in with your TIN and check your application’s status. Do note that this one works better with applications lodged online. Those lodged by other means will probably have fewer updates, as these will have to be entered manually in the embassy’s database.
