Lindau is perhaps a little known district in Bavaria, to the very South of Germany. The area is very close to the borders of Switzerland and Austria, is relatively small (about 12 square miles) and is home to about 25,000 occupants. Despite the fact that you may never have heard of Lindau, it is actually a very popular tourist resort.
The historic city of Lindau is contained on a small island in the eastern part of Lake Constance, the Bodensee. The island is very small (it is only a quarter square mile) and is easily recognisable from an aerial view as it is quite far out in the lake, and has two distinct connections to the mainland. These connections are bridges; one is for a road and the other is a railway line. This town is packed full of must see historic attractions including the old town hall, the lighthouse, the Church of St Stephan, the Cathedral and the Promenade.
The most popular time to visit Lindau is the summer, as it provides lots of sports and leisure facilities. In particular it is popular for water sports enthusiasts in the Lake, with the sports highlight taking place in June when there is an annual long-distance yacht race around the lake. Over 500 yachts take place in the race, so it is truly an amazing event to take part in and even just to watch as a spectator. Three miles outside the island, there is also the Lindauer Golf Course. This 18-hole course is said to be one of the most beautiful in Europe, and offers stunning views of the nearby lake and mountains.
There are also lots of gardens and bays to visit which are made all the more beautiful by the amazing scenic views, including the nearby Swiss mountains and the Alps. There are also lots of heated outdoor swimming pools for those not so interested in swimming in the lake, and for children there is a 78 metre long water slide which is always really popular.
If you’re planning a trip to the area, there are lots of Lindau Hotels to choose from. There are over 80 hotels, and also a huge number of inns, bed and breakfasts, guest houses and more. The city is said to have over 3,000 beds available. Additionally, there are also private rooms and apartments that you can rent, as well as modern youth hostel setup to attract students and younger visitors to the area.
