Living Through Traffic While Keeping a Holiday Spirit
Words: 540 | Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2010

The busiest time for travel is right before and right after major holidays. The roads often become extremely busy during these times, as people are rushing to get to their holiday destinations. Although holidays are generally a joyous time of the year, there is unfortunately a rise in car accidents and instances of road rage. Also, a result of having more cars on the road is a higher stress level suffered by drivers. To overcome the woes of holiday traffic jams, try and keep the following tips in mind. These suggestions will help you slow down and enjoy your entire holiday, not just the time when you are not in the car.

The first step that you must take so you can enjoy the drive to your holiday destination is to know exactly where you are going and how you plan to get there. Having the address to your destination is an obvious but often overlooked necessity; you would be amazed at how many people leave for the holidays without knowing the exact location of their hotel or their relative's house. You need to have your information straight! This will cut down on the stress and keep you relaxed on the road.

When traveling over the holidays, make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Being rushed on a busy highway will increase your stress level and make the drive unpleasant for everyone in the car. Try to wake up earlier and have your things ready to be loaded in the car. This will allow you to feel organized, be energized and confident about your trip as well as handle any unforeseen issues that you may need to attend to before you hit the open road, such as topping off the gas tank that you thought was full the night before.

Although holidays are about time spent with family and friends, you can kick-start your holiday by bringing the spirit of celebration along for the ride. While in the car, listen to music that pertains to whatever holiday you are celebrating. If there is no music available (popular holidays such as Memorial Day and Labor Day don't really have an accompanying soundtrack), talk about what the holiday stands for and how you personally like to celebrate it. Remember, each holiday has a special meaning, and people often overlook the purposes behind the parties. By talking about why this day is special you will really get everyone in the car into the holiday spirit as well as educate children!

Although there are endless tips and suggestions you can follow to get the most out of your holiday travel, the most useful recommendation out there is to relax. If you are really focused on enjoying your time off with your family and friends, you will be able to handle anything that comes your way, be it bad drivers on the expressway or a long line at the gas station. When setting out for your holiday getaway, remember that the holidays are set aside for celebration and that by being prepared and saying calm you will be able to appreciate what the holidays are all about!
